Route 66 - Glen Rio NM, December 2015

The dusty Ozark Trail was paved and brought roadside prosperity to the 30 residents of Glen Rio NM in 1926. Two decades later Art Deco influenced the construction of a Texaco station (near ground) and the Little Juarez Cafe (standing far left), which was also known as the Brownlee Cafe.

For three weeks the 1940 movie, the Grapes of Wrath, was filmed here. Current population is approximately two.

East of Cadillac Ranch was a bullet-holed steak house that became an RV Park - so why not add a Muffler Man, praise gun-toting and stick a few more Cadillac's in the ground?

2nd Amendment Cowboy is perhaps the best example of Mother Road parody, tourism and Wild West sentiment. Don't forget to buy a tee shirt.

Wilkerson's Gas Station

Newkirk NM is often described as a city which wasn't bypassed but instead cut in two by I-40. Either way the effect was the same.

Wilerson's was formerly a Gulf Station, then itself finally closed in 1989. A caretaker kept it as a historical monument for some years thereafter, but the adobe dissolved, the plate glass broke; the rest was made souvenir by vandals.

It's amazing what investment and business practice can do for an iconic road relic. Richard Koch, Route 66 enthusiast and oil man, bought the original gas station and cafe, then move to a new location serving well made burgers and All American food. The new restaurant (not pictured) has a parking lot full of cars and the original location remains a frequent stop for tourists.
